What is the Kickstart Scheme?
The Kickstart scheme was launched by the UK government in 2020 to support job placements for young people who are currently receiving Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment. Thousands of individuals between the ages of 16-24 have taken part in the scheme and have gained an abundance of valuable work experience and new skills to help them further develop their careers.
Kickstart at Astute
In April 2021 Astute welcomed our first two Kickstarters as our Recruitment Support Assistant and Marketing Support Assistant. Both of our Kickstart placements successfully completed the scheme and during their time here, gained considerable skills, describing the experience as “one-hundred per cent the best decision they made this year.”
At the end of their six months with us, we asked them to summarise their experience with the scheme and with Astute:
“I would summarise it as a successful experience of learning and skill development. I have made many friends here at Astute and feel as ingrained in their culture as anyone. The welcome and support I received at the beginning of my time here haven’t dissipated, Astute are as genuine with me now as they were from day 1.”

“At the end of this experience, I can say I’ve had a cracking time. The work was challenging but fun, I really enjoy talking to candidates on the phone and I’ve learned so much about the ins and outs of this job.”
Recruitment support assistant
Astute has successfully placed 12 Kickstarters into a variety of positions since partnering with the government scheme, expanding further with additions to our marketing department. Adding a Graphic Design Support Assistant has given Astute the opportunity to train a designer and give them the real experience they needed to sharpen their skills and learn new things.
“My time here has been fantastic, the things I’ve learned here aren’t things you can learn in a classroom. I feel as though I’ve learned the same amount here as I did at university. Everyone has been super welcoming, and I’ve had the space to develop my skills and strengths in an environment that really values it.”

Our Partnership with HSDC
Astute has worked with colleges, universities, and schools to support work experience programmes, CV writing skills, and training courses, and recently all our Kickstarters have completed their Level 1 Employability Skills qualification through Havant and Southdowns College and passed with flying colours! Working with HSDC has been a great opportunity to support young workers with the tools they need to thrive and succeed, and we are incredibly proud to see some of our Kickstarters get commendations from their teachers for how hard they worked on their courses!
…in the Future
After having such a successful experience with all of our Kickstarters the first time around, we are proud to support the scheme again this January 2022 and look forward to welcoming a new batch of Recruitment Support Assistants later this month.
