<p>IR35 is the commonly used term for the UK legislation introduced over 20 years ago to prevent“disguised employment” tax avoidance.</p><p>In simple terms, avoidance arises when the disguised employee takes advantage of lower taxationoffered to corporates than that given to individuals, by working through an intermediary vehicle,such as a personal service company (PSC).</p><p>Reforms to this legislation were introduced in the Public Sector in 2017, and then rolled out to thePrivate Sector in 2021. From 6 April 2021, the responsibility for determining an IR35 status changedfrom the director of the PSC to the end client (when working with medium or large businesses). Thefee payer (usually the agency) then has the responsibility for ensuring the correct tax and NICs arededucted from the fees and paid to HMRC.</p>

<p>Graduating with a degree in Business Management from Loughborough University, Arj found that recruitment was a great career choice for him.</p><p>Arj started his recruitment career working in FMCG and supply chain recruitment in London before moving back to his Portsmouth routes and joining Astute in 2017.</p>

<p>Starting at Astute in 2013, Kev joined us to tackle the water market before transitioning to specialise in Power and Energy from Waste as a Recruitment Resourcer (now known as Delivery Consultants). </p><p>His first role at Astute was to find the right candidates for the right roles mainly working on contract recruitment with the odd permanent roles thrown in making Kev an all-round recruiter.</p>

<p>Tim’s career began in performing as a professional singer in a close harmony group, singing at major venues,  events, cruise ships and also by royal command for Princess Anne at St James’ Palace!</p><p>Joining Astute in 2019, Tim had worked in recruitment previously and has ample experience in M&amp;E and construction recruitment for both contract and permanent staffing.</p>

This provides assurance to all parties that your business is adequately protected in the event of a claim against you. It also demonstrates financial risk and helps to support your IR35 status.</p><p><strong>Does Astute require me to have insurance?</strong></p><p>Yes. To ensure your business is fully protected and compliant with our requirements, all limited company contractors must have the relevant insurances in place. You will also be asked to provide documentary evidence of this. </p><p>Professional Indemnity (limit required £1m)</p><p>- Professional Indemnity covers contractors who provide expertise, skills or advice. If you are accused of professional negligence, making an error or omission, or giving bad advice which results in a client losing money, this insurance provides cover for legal defence costs and damages awarded against you. It also covers any breach of confidence and sharing confidential commercially sensitive information without consent. </p>

<p>Public Liability (limit required £5m)</p><p>- Public Liability insurance provides cover if someone is injured or property is damaged as a result of your actions whilst supplying services. Whether you are on your own premises or at a client’s site, you have a duty to protect anyone who might be affected by your activities. If you fail to do this, you may have to pay substantial compensation.</p><p>Employers’ Liability (limit required £10m)</p><p>- A compulsory insurance for all UK businesses with employees, Employers’ Liability insurance provides protection against claims from employees. Regardless of your set-up, this is often insisted upon and may be needed in the event a substitute is required to provide services during the course of your assignment.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Astute recently had the privilege of visiting Jean's House in Southampton, a home from home run by our Charity of the Year, Young Lives vs Cancer.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Jean's House offers vital support for children and young people being treated for cancer at the nearby Southampton Hospital&nbsp; saving sometimes hundreds of miles in travel and expense when getting regular treatment.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">In the face of a loved one's cancer diagnosis, families encounter immense difficulties, including the fear of treatment, financial burdens, mental health struggles, and a lack of support systems that can disrupt their lives.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Jean's House provides a remarkable solution by offering a free place to stay and support to families, ensuring they can stay close to their child during their cancer treatments.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Originally a BnB, Jean's House has been transformed into a haven for families. The house now features seven en-suite bedrooms, ensuring each family has a comfortable place to stay.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">The spacious and impeccably clean house includes a large open-plan kitchen, living room, and dining room, providing a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, there is a games room where children and teenagers can relax and take a much-needed break from their treatments.</p>
<p dir="ltr">To further enhance the convenience and comfort for families, each occupying family is provided with their own cupboard stocked with essential supplies, such as toiletries and food. This thoughtful provision helps alleviate some of the stress and challenges that families face on a daily basis.</p>
<p dir="ltr">During our visit, <a href="../../../../../../our-team/sam-bradshaw/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Samantha Bradshaw</a>, our Head of People, had the opportunity to tour Jean's House and meet the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to support families affected by cancer. Samantha also used this time to donate items from our Food Bank at the office, witnessing firsthand the significant impact these contributions have on the families.</p>
<p dir="ltr">One critical ongoing need at Jean's House is cleaning supplies. Ensuring a safe and hygienic environment is crucial for the well-being of the children and their families during their treatments. From surfaces and sofas to bedding and curtains, maintaining immaculate cleanliness is of utmost importance. Therefore, there can never be too many cleaning supplies to support this cause.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Astute will soon be returning to Jean's House and setting up another Donation Bank, with a special focus on collecting cleaning supplies. We recognise the importance of this ongoing need and are committed to providing support in any way we can.</p>
